Cooking Garlic and Broccoli Recipe Makes Your Cold Feel Better

Broccoli, garlic, and olive oil quick fry

Last week I spent most of the week with THE COLD FROM HELL. You KNOW what this is like right? Fever that makes your hair stick to your head and non-stop sneezing. It’s like a giant family of disgustingness has moved into your chest, but refuses to leave. You cannot cough it out or hold it in. Therefore you cough until your sides hurt and your dream of poking your watery eyes out with an unsharpened spoon because that might feel better than laying in bed unable to write, breathe, talk, cook, or see-straight. Yeah. That sick.

During a feverish bout of semi-deliriousness, I try to think of cures for the common cold. I remembered the last time I was this sick from a simple cold — I passed out on the ground and my kids called the emergency team to rescue me (who I fondly remember as Hunky Harry and G.I. Joe). At any rate, one of the emergency rescue team asked what I had been eating that day. And that’s the moment in my memory when it struck me – the cure for the common cold must be in what you eat – or at least some good food will make me feel better.

I spent some time online and found out that garlic is simply amazing for colds because garlic contains compounds such as allicin, which is what gives garlic an antioxidant property. Even though it is fall, I still have some broccoli growing out in the front lawn vegetable garden. So I whipped up some garlic yumminess with a new recipe I invented myself while delirious and here’s what I discovered: Broccoli + Garlic = Delicious!!

Shawna Coronado's broccoli in November.

Ingredients –

  • One head broccoli, chopped
  • 3 Tablespoons of garlic (or more if you are up for the challenge), chopped
  • Olive Oil
  • Salt
  • Freshly cracked black pepper

Instructions –

  1. Heat olive oil in pan.
  2. Toss in broccoli and stir-fry.
  3. When it is almost fork tender add garlic
  4. Toss in pan until the garlic is tender.
  5. Add salt and lots of cracked pepper

And guess what? It made me feel a little bit better. I did not recover 100%, but having some garlic love wrapped around your heart sure makes it easier to feel more cheerful.

Next time you are sick and desperately thinking up a cure for the common cold from hell, why not try adding a heavy dose of garlic into your recipes. At least try this bit of broccoli and garlic love as a healthy culinary choice for dinner.

Special Note – Because the FTC requires it, I am letting you know that  Bonnie Plants supplied me with broccoli plants I used to cook this dish with. I donate a large portion of the vegetables I grow in my soil-improved garden to the local food pantry when harvested. All opinions are my own!
