Eco Tour A Butterfly Swarm and the Deep Jungle in Sian Ka’an, Mexico

Going to Sian Ka’an, a UNESCO world heritage biosphere reserve in the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico, was an astounding and empowering experience. Sian Ka’an is 1.2 million acres of jungle, ocean, cenote, and Mayan cultural exploration.
As soon as we hopped out of the van – driving nearly an hour south of Playa Del Carmen, Mexico to get to the site – we were surrounded by masses of blue butterflies. They rested in quick sand along a water front and danced all around us while we were near the docks. In the photo above you can see my cameraman standing at the edge of a special type of quick sand near the docks trying to capture the butterflies in flight.
We climbed an impossibly steep jungle fire tower and toured the jungles of Sian Ka’an; documenting the experience on film. Trudging through jungles in 100 degree temperatures was a huge challenge for us all. Deep in the jungle the air is blocked by all the forest plants, so it is hot – we are covered in sweat.
Climbing the fire tower was a bit scary, but the true excitement was touching a unique part of nature up close – seeing hundreds of butterflies just centimeters in front of our faces – absolutely priceless.
