Spring Harry

Spring garden

Today I came across this photo of Harry the Pug on my spring path. It tugged at my heart because right now the path is under a foot of snow.

Outdoors it is cold and silent; there are no birds, bees, ground squirrels, or Harry the Pugs walking my garden paths. Truly it appears to be dead. Yet the countdown has begun for spring, at least my personal countdown.

Only a few short months away, it seems like forever until I can put my bare feet into the rich life-filled garden right outside my front door.

I miss spring! Do you?

Give me some sustaining fuel readers – tell me about your plans for your spring gardens. Perhaps sharing a few plans and ideas will make spring come a little more quickly!

  1. Shawna – every year I've tried to do one major project (install patio, pergola, expand kitchen garden etc) and this year I'd like to install a wide curved walking path from my patio to garage, made of stone just like the one in your photo. I'm excited for it to be finished, but not excited about hauling all those heavy stones!

  2. I am in a new house for this spring, and I am already scoping out the best places in the backyard to put in the raised beds! My seeds are on their way and I hope to put them under the grow lights in the next couple of weeks.

  4. My project is to work with a team to install a cistern which collects rain off my roof and transfers it into a recirculating waterfall. I'm pretty darned excited about it. 🙂

  5. It is beautiful up here on Mt. Hood (Oregon) this week- looks and smells like spring! I even washed the car yesterday! BUT winter will come back with a vengeance if we dare to plant just yet. So I am going to start some peas indoors: English peas, Oregon snow peas and even sweet peas. Frankly I have never succeeded at this effort in the past, so am crossing my fingers…

  6. Oh – Please help!! I really want to do a garden this year & I am NOT a green thumb. I have a little area of land I can plant in front of my condo. It is western facing and gets LOTS of direct sunlight.

What I really want to do is grow as many vegetables and herbs as possible. In the past I've had some luck growing hot banana peppers, but that's about it.

The soil is VERY clay-y and I want to know what if anything I should be doing now? any step-by-step advice (previous blog post?)

I need gardening for dummies and I'd like to try and do it with as little chemicals as possible…

    thanks!

  7. This is the year for walkways and water features. I've put this off for tooooo long. I don't care for the heavy lifting but I'd like to find a way to drown out traffic noise from new neighbors.

  8. Hi Shawna! My plans are similar to Gina's…we are planning on putting up a pergola on a stone base and plan on doing it ourselves….we'll see how that goes! 🙂 I would also like to put in winding path along my woodland garden like the one in your photo.
We have a rain barrel that I would like to get installed early spring, too.
Your garden looks lovely! Makes me long for spring even more! Unfortunately, here in Illinois, we are supposed to get up to 12 inches of snow this weekend… 🙁

  9. Kasey –

I have some great ideas for you. Like you, I also have a tremendous amount of clay in my soil. You can look on my blog under “soil” or “compost” and get a few tidbits, however, I think you just inspired me to write a more thorough detail on soil amendment that will help you in your garden.

Kasey, feel free to email me through here or FB and I'll help you get started with more detail on better soil.

    Take care,

    Shawna

  10. I am making several new raised beds from field stone under a few large maples. I'm making a large new iris bed. And I am putting in a large new sunny bed. Plus the veggy garden of course.

  11. I have a whole host of projects for this spring. I have a stone patio I built a year and a half ago and am finally getting around to building a pergola on it. I'm tossing around ideas for the top tier of beams right now, but I've got the footings set and 10 6×6 posts (I need 4 more solid 6×6's).

I am also getting a garden set. This weekend I'm building the fence around it. I have seeds started already, but average date of last frost is at least 3 wks away still.

It looks like planting and pergola building will likely fall during spring break week for me. I don't think I could ask for better timing, but I certainly won't be relaxing.

  12. My plan is to watch for spring! Usually this time of year I begin to look for trees flowering, like red and silver maples. By late Feb the flower buds begin to swell and with a few sunny, warm days we will see them blooming in early March. Most people don't even notice–only us tree folks notice but to me it signals the real coming of spring.

  20. I think that what you wrote was actually very
reasonable. But, think about this, suppose you composed a catchier title?
I am not suggesting your information is not good., however what if you added
a title to maybe get a person’s attention? I mean What Are Your Spring Garden Plans?
    – Shawna Coronado is a little vanilla. You should look at Yahoo’s home page and note
how they create news titles to grab people interested.
You might try adding a video or a related pic or two
to get readers interested about what you’ve got to say.
Just my opinion, it would bring your posts a little bit more interesting.
