October: the month of candy in the United States. Kids have been back-to-school for a few months now and are in desperate need of something healthy and nutritious to keep them going above and beyond the pre-Halloween candy supply. Why not try livening up your child’s snacks and lunches with a bento bowl?

While at the International Home and Housewares event last season I met up with the San Yoshi Lacquerware product through the Focus Corp US team (see right). While they sell several types of bowls and various lacquerware from Japan, I fell madly in love with the adorable and colorful bento bowls (below). I see them as a positive choice for healthy snacks and lunches for the whole family and ordered several samples to try out.

Below is a “Bento Bowl Recipe” which is perfect for breakfast or a pre-prepared after-school snack. As part of my initiative to get healthy, I have been eating a meatless lunch five times per week and think this high-protein bento box would work brilliantly as a meatless meal as well.

BENTO BOWL RECIPE:

  • One single serving carton of yogurt, flavored or vanilla
  • 1/2 cup blueberries
  • 1/2 cup granola
  • 1/4 cup mixed nuts

Mix nuts and granola together and place on the handy top shelf of the bento bowl. Add the blueberries to the other half of the shelf. Fill the bottom part of the bento box with a single serving of your favorite yogurt.

Right now there is a limited selection of the San Yoshi Lacquerware bento box or bento bowl colors available in the U.S.  WhiskNYC and MoMA Store have several colors and you can order directly. To find more colors reach out to the team at Focus America. Meanwhile, I will continue to bring a few bento bowl recipes to you in the upcoming months that will inspire you to eat healthily and stay healthy.
