Use Gardening To Stop Smoking – Plan Now For 2010
When I began my journey in gardening I was very ill of health. Now, after many years of gardening and greening my life by living more sustainably, I feel wonderful. It is possible to achieve a lot of your health and de-stressing goals by gardening.
There’s a woman who lives in my suburban neighborhood who has changed her life for the better by gardening. She has stopped smoking.
Her name is Kathy and she has overcome many burdens in life and has made a lot of personal sacrifices for her family. Kathy’s left the excuses regarding the difficult aspects of her life on the couch in front of the television and has gotten out and turned gardening to her advantage. It has helped her stop smoking.
Smoking is a very difficult thing to overcome and Kathy wants to be healthy. Her reward for quitting has been that for every penny she used to spend on cigarettes, she now spends on gardening. Her yard is a beautiful example of love and good health. “Chippy”, my little yard-chipmunk, crosses the street to visit Kathy’s house every morning. Nature is testifying to Kathy’s achievement!
Kathy’s gardening choice now allows her to get out regularly and bend, lift, and dig. She breathes fresh air instead of smoke and gets serotonin exposure by being in the daylight. Over the last year I have seen Kathy’s strength improve and her yard turn into an Eden. Kathy smiles more, and is getting healthier because of her garden and her desire to stop smoking. How wonderful is that?
Using gardening as a tool to improve health is a great thing to do. Why not plan to make 2010 your year to get healthy? Start now by planning out the gardens you will build and the money you will save.
Please get off that couch, stop making excuses, stop complaining, and start applying a positive attitude to unhealthy habits you have in your life. Use Kathy as inspiration. It is not about perfection – there is no such thing. However, getting outside more often is certainly about feeling better. Do you know your neighbors? Perhaps you can make a positive difference for your neighborhood. Have your neighbors and friends help you and you help them in return. If you live in an apartment or condo, help the community with community gardening projects.
If Kathy can use gardening to stop smoking, and I can use gardening to improve my health, then the future is rife with possibilities; you can do it too.

Kudos to Kathy for quitting that nasty habit! I quit (cold turkey) in 2003 and haven't regretted it! Oh, I still have an occasional craving, but it passes. I know I'm much healthier and more able to enjoy all that gardening has to offer. (To help me remember those days and how I managed to do it with nothing but willpower, I grow nicotiana in a special spot in my garden.)
I didn't start gardening until after I had my first heart attack. I did mangage to quit smoking pretty quick after it almost snuffed out my life.
I find gardening a great way to get fresh air and exercise. Those are important along with my walks but for me it was more of finding a way to focus my mind and not think about dropping over dead 24/7.
It's now been almost 5 years since my life changed and gardening in our backyard is likely the best thing I've done for myself.
Isn't it wonderful? I'm so proud of Kathy and feel that this is possible for so many.
Congratulations to both of you for staying smoke free – and for gardening.
You're awesome!

I havent quit smoking yet, but you definitely smoke less when your working.
You are right – plus working outside is a stimulant – sunshine exposure creates serotonin chemical release which makes you “feel good”. All in all nature and gardening is a definite plus to help you quit.
Good luck Zack – I hope you do it!
Best wishes,

I am very happy for Kathy and others like her. To quit smoking is a great thing, but to use gardening as a means to quit is wonderful. This is proof that gardening provides much more than just fresh vegetables and beautiful flowers. I am a true believer that gardening can not only help sustain a healthier dinner table, and a beautiful landscape, but also a healthier lifestyle. It brings a smile to my face to read stories like your neighbor's – Thanks for sharing it!
Glad you liked the story Tee – happier yet that Kathy's quit smoking.
