Rocks and slag glass in Dallas garden at Garden Writers Association

This week I went to the Garden Writers Association Symposium in Dallas, Texas. What an adventure: 104-degree heat index, garden tours, workshops, and a trade show all with 400 of my closest friends. A downright amazing experience and if you are a garden writer, you should be a part of the GWA organization.

David Perry, an astoundingly good photographer, inspired me to take photos that tell more of a story. David’s breakout session on capturing a story in photographer brought tears to my eyes it was so beautiful. Billy Goodnick, a rather fantastically funny garden architect, spoke as an expert on creatively expressing oneself as a garden writer. His educational and inspirational session was great and he challenged us, writers, to post a blog post using one of our photos and some creative writing to share with our friends. I am up to that challenge, Billy! Below is my creative write-up which is based on the above photo I took on one of our garden tours. Let me know what you think – did I effectively combine David’s advice and Billy’s advice to tell a story about a garden photo?

Women in a Garden

Black and gray river of rocks flow like waves breaking along the garden shore path.

Women, curved and pregnant, dance around a slag glass island in a stream. They spin with the force of time in nature.

These ladies sway as a meditation. Rolling through the garden in thoughtful discovery of silence and peace.

Thanks for the inspiration gentleman. For my readers – – I wish happy garden inspiration for you all today and hope you will go to David and Billy’s blogs and learn as much as I have.

  1. I haven't found slag glass for sale yet in my area, but I find plenty of frosted sea glass on the beaches, which make en extraordinary mulch for containers. I might consider adding them to my rain garden too, poking out like hidden gems. Thanks for the inspiration!
