Vertical Garden Planters Are Easy To Install in Full Shade

Living Wall Planter on Shawna Coronado fence

Vertical gardens have become my passion. I love them. Adore them. They rock my world. What’s all the excitement about? Bringing your eye up!! How often do you go to a garden Living Wall Planter Instructionsand spend your time with your eyeballs down? A LOT. I want to change that in my garden, so when you walk through the garden you are surrounded by garden love on all levels. This season we installed the Living Wall Planter from Woollypocket.com on my back fence wall and it made the fence wall come alive.

I love the packaging on the Living Wall Planter because it clearly states that it is more sustainable. It is recyclable, made in America, and BPA free (that means safe for growing vegetables) and it also shows how you can use the actual packaging to measure and mark off where the planters need to be hung.

Ricky Rolon, my handy-dandy rock-n-roll carpenter, agreed to come out and help with the measuring and drilling – – it took us less than 20 minutes to pull it out of the box, drill, and hang the planters. As you can see in the below we added a wood support on the fence so the planters would hang evenly. Outside of that, we simply followed the instructions.

Soil and Planting TechniquesFTC Disclaimer

The planters are displayed in full shade and have both organic vegetables and herbs; Swiss Chard, Blood Beets, Chocolate Mint, Mint, and Sweet Potato Vine. Sounds like the perfect juice recipe, doesn’t it? I planted Beets, Mint, and Swiss Chard along the back of the planter and the Chocolate Mint and Sweet Potato Vine in the front. Each container is filled with organic soil and additives; one half Organic Mechanics Potting Soil, one half rotted manure, a tablespoon of Actino-Iron, and a tablespoon of Pure Elements SoilSuccess Renew + Transform. Surprisingly, the planters seem to hold water very well, but still allow for air circulation in the root system. This is excellent and the plants have been exploding out of their wall containers.

Having vegetable filled wall planters brings the eye up in the garden and adds to the interest your garden shows to visitors. More importantly, wall planters enable heavy vegetable planting even in full shade and in urban and challenging garden areas and this makes the solution more sustainable. Gardening up enables you to connect your eye with more living material and enhance the garden experience.

With all the fence we have I could put the whole garden on the fence. I’m wondering if this would work with root vegetables, like carrots and beets. I’ve had terrible luck with them for two or three years running. I will try it. Hmm…probably have to do it next year. Thanks for another terrific idea!

Yes, Rose. This can work with root vegetables that don’t go too deep. Perhaps most except potatoes, although potatoes might work too.

Great idea! I have no more room for my vegetable and herb plants in my garden, but have plenty of room on my fence. Thanks!
