How to grow iris

This has been the week of the Chicago Flower and Garden Show. I loved this year’s show – really fantastic. One of my favorite speakers was Kelly Norris. He runs Rainbow Iris Farm in Bedford, Iowa, and spoke on how to grow iris, and showed us a lot of great varieties he sells. I was drooling all over my garden brochure.

Surprisingly in early March, the very next day I spotted my first flowering iris in the front bed (above). Little Iris reticulata flowers in late March to early April in the zone 5b area of Chicagoland – here she is surprising me a bit early.

If you would like to go to the Chicago Flower and Garden Show to see some incredible speakers and amazing landscape and garden ideas, there is still time over the weekend. The show will close late Sunday afternoon.

My parents have taught me how important it is to step out of our busy lives to enjoy and appreciate nature. Thanks for the great reminder!

  2. My iris bloomed last week, but they are against a south wall and a much warmer micro climate! However, my roses have leafed out as well. Let's hope we don't have a severe freeze.
