Globe Basil is A Rabbit Resistant Plant In The Garden

Rabbits Do Not Like Globe Basil Plants

Notice any rabbits in my photos of the garden near the Spicy Globe Basil? No? Hmmmm? Me neither. In fact, once the Spicy Globe Basil filled in all around the borders of the garden, not a single rabbit stepped inside. Now we all know that there are exceptions to any rabbit or deer resistant plant rule – a hungry animal can still decimate a garden no matter what resistance the plant is said to have. HOWEVER, I found the Spicy Globe Basil remarkably rabbit resistant. This means you might have success growing the plant as a rabbit resistant herb as well.

Globe basil like a consistently moist, well drained spot in full sun. While the herb is incredibly tasty in salads and Mediterranean dishes, it is also good used in cocktails and for aromatherapy purposes. Below you see it bordering my front lawn vegetable garden. I let the plant flower out – its little white flowers are adored by butterflies and bees, so it makes an excellent pollinator plant contribution to any herb or flower garden. Give it a try to deter rabbits in your garden.

  1. How big does a single Globe Basil plant grow? Thanks for the tip–this is my first experience with bunnies, which I don’t mind having as visitors, unless they belly up to the Salvia and Pentas I just planted.

Come to think of it, the basil and my drought tolerant plants might not be well suited for the same flowerbed, water wise. Hmmm…

  2. Do you have any suggestions of how to keep raccoons out of my potted plants? Thanks for the rabbit info..Guess Im fortunate they dont both my gardens but I have oregano, mints, sages, lavenders, rosemary, cilantro , basil planted around an maybe thats what keepn them out

  3. Hi Celeste, I do not have any ideas for raccoons. We’ve found them nearly impossible to deal with. Sometimes the best best is turn music on in the area they’re bothering. Also automatic water sprinklers will sometimes scare them and they won’t bother with the containers. I’d also try raising the containers up higher – although of course raccoons can climb – but it’s worth the try!

    Best of luck,

    Shawna
