Front Lawn Vegetable Garden Sun Ray Design

We northern gardeners are all covered in snow and desperate for spring early in the season. Clutching our cups of hot tea with fingers just itching to get into the soil. Now is the perfect time to start planning our spring garden design. This season I went back to basics with the front lawn vegetable garden. While the front lawn has been made into a colorful rainbow garden, a giant flower garden, and more, my favorite design is still the simple sun burst design I created originally (see design right).

The test garden this season was a tremendous success – between the front lawn veggie garden, containers, living walls, and the back yard garden we were able to donate over 500 pounds of food to the local food pantry.

Plants Recommended for the Garden –

  1. Swiss Chard – Bright Lights Swiss Chard
  2. Cabbage – Danish Ballhead Cabbage
  3. Rutabaga – Purple Top RutabagaSwiss Chard Lucullus
  4. Cabbage – Ruby Perfection Cabbage
  5. Kale – Tronchuda Beira Hybrid

Remember my secret to success is the soil — this is a till-free garden. Every year I add more organic material to the soil and fertilize with organic fertilizers at planting time. After that I fertilize only if a plant needs it. Soil success is the key! Here is a link to my – BEST SOIL SECRETS.

How To Grow a Sun Ray Vegetable Garden –

  1. Amend soil by layering organic matter (see BEST SOIL SECRESTS link above – soil testing will help you understand what you might need to add to the soil)
  2. Dig a hole
  3. Add organic fertilizer to hole
  4. Plant vegetable or herb in hole
  5. Water regularly
  6. Weed regularly

Sounds pretty simple, doesn’t it? Maintaining a garden takes consistent maintenance, but having a front lawn vegetable garden that is giving back to the community is definitely worth the effort. Please donate your extra vegetables and herbs from your vegetable garden to local food pantries. If you would like to find local food pantries that take fresh vegetables, try going to the online organization AmpleHarvest.org and search their database to find a food pantry.

  3. It’s definitely one of the best plans I’ve seen. Such a cute front lawn garden 🙂 I’m still not ready with my garden plan and I could use yours as a guideline (really liked it!) and got some ideas on the plants you you are growing too.
