Recently I traveled to Albuquerque, New Mexico to appear on several news tv programs and run a seminar at High Country Gardens, an amazing nursery which specializes in low water plants and eco-friendly landscaping.  While walking through the nursery I spotted the coolest little bit of a planter  – a hypertufa ice cream cone container literally the size of a real ice cream cone. LOVE IT.

Doug Kaufman, the charming manager and expert on all things drought-tolerant at the High Country Gardens store in Albuquerque says the darling little containers are a perfect fit for a single Hen and Chick “ice cream”. I chose a Sempervivum ‘Red cobweb’ and packed the plant and ice cream cone container planter in a plastic bag in my luggage to return to Chicago. A few days later I used just a bit of Organic Mechanics planting soil and scooped the ice cream Hen and Chick into the bitty ice cream cone planter. I tucked the ice cream cone into a full sized drought tolerant container on my front patio.

Everyone who spots the little hidden ice cream cone falls in love with it. As you can see by the below photo, my ice cream cone Hen and Chick is all grown up now and loving it’s super sweet spot in my container garden. It would work planted outside in summer weather or even inside on a windowsill.

If you want to get your very own Ice Cream Cone Container, the High Country Gardens Store in Albuquerque, New Mexico has CLOSED. And the bad news — I CANNOT FIND IT ANYWHERE ONLINE. If anyone happens to find these again, please let me know and I will update this post. Thanks!

Special Note – Because the FTC requires it, I am letting you know that Organic Mechanics Soil supplied the 2 tablespoons of potting soil I used in this garden planting. I purchased everything else myself.

  2. You can actually use a real ice cream cone to do this. You just plant the seed in the cone with some dirt and place the whole thing in the ground. I did this but my ice cream cone has lots of hairs and spots on it, I don’t know what it is. It may be mould, but if anyone knows what it is, please reply to this:)
