Recently Fields & Lane glove company contacted me and asked me to review their gloves. In the middle of winter. In the freezing cold. My gnomes are asleep for heaven’s sake! I rose to the challenge by putting the gloves through [insert superhero intro music here] –  The Shawna-marator!

I figure if the gloves can survive me abusing the heck out of them, they can survive your garden too.

Fields & Lane gloves range from $18.50 to $29.50 and are made of goat leather– known for being soft, flexible, and naturally water-resistant. Although all of the leather used by the company is sourced in the USA, the gloves are made in a fair trade factory in San Isidro, Costa Rica.

First I took the gloves to the track. Now, granted, the track is not normally found in your back yard, but if you are like me you drop your gloves, step on them, and run them over with your wheelbarrow regularly. So I figured running over them and stomping them into the track would be a close equivalent. I jumped up and down on each glove 300 times.

The gloves are lined with cloth and were both warm and comfortable, so I spent two hours clipping all the brush branches that are sticking out in awkward spots in my garden. In 20 degree weather. Everything was cold except my hands. :: teeth chattering::

After trimming limbs, I decided to CLIP THE GLOVES!! Because I have accidentally clipped my gloves before and felt this test was absolutely necessary. Why did I accidentally clip my gloves? Because I am an idiot. The clipper left a very tiny slit and it did not cut all the way through the leather.

Next, The Shawna-marator put the gloves through damp and wet hell. Because face it – the garden is dirty, damp, and wet most of the time. This is what makes it so much fun.

I gathered wet leaves from around my rainwater fountain, then to back up the concept, I ran both gloves under the water for 20 minutes. NO KIDDING – 20 MINUTES! Guess what? After they dried the goat leather was perfectly good. No stains. No stiffness. They felt wonderful and I am downright shocked that these gloves survived The Shawna-marator!

  1. These gloves are right up my alley..whether I win or not I will be looking at them as serious contenders for replacement of the gloves I blow through in a month or 2 ….my area is frequently wet in spring and fall when i do the most gardening and the leather wears out faster once it is wet. Thx for the review.

  2. oh wow… those gloves look awesome. The water test was intriguing, that's always what sets me up for new gloves, I hate how you cant' get that stiffness worked out of most gloves… like… ever. 🙂

  3. Shawna, you cracked me up with your field tests of those gloves! Goodness knows, I needed to find a new brand, since every pair I buy is usually destroyed within a month or two of buying. Seriously, I go through several pairs a year! Would love to try these out! The humidity test especially helped me. Our weather here is always humid, and the fingers often just rot out from being wet so much.

  4. Thank you for the information …i have connected with them on FB. My old hands need protection and i am excited about these…..thanks for putting them to the test, i really enjoyed the pictures : )

  5. Wow—good gloves and a chance to WIN them! The perfect combination for the Frugal Gardener (me)

  6. Every pair of gloves I own has holes in the fingertips…I would love to win the gloves you are offering.

  7. These look awesome! I'll admit that I am only in the infancy stage of trying to garden outside, but I'm hoping this year will help me turn my thumb green! Would love the gloves to help me!

  8. I go through gloves like crazy! A big thing for us is all the cactus and once it gets attached to the gloves you are doomed. Hope I win!!!

  9. Loved your review! These look like gloves I would really enjoy using in the yard and garden. Thanks for the chance to own them (and if I don't win I may own them anyway!)

  10. I'm a newbie to gardening blogs. We are moving into our first home this summer and all I've been able to do is dream about ideas for our garden areas. (There are some really wonderful garden spots.) I have to build up my garden gear, so thanks for the tip about the gloves. Even if I don't win, I'll be looking into purchasing some. Can't wait to see what else you have in your blogs! 🙂

  11. These gloves look amazing! If you put them through all these tests I'm sure they would last for years in my garden. Quite frankly I'm tired of my fingers being stained black from digging – gloveless – in the garden.

  12. I would also use these now when I put wood into our wood heater. I have to use some or I get splinters or burned, and I went to close the door yesterday and found out mine had a hole in them, ouch!

  13. Even after your tough testing, you said the gloves remained soft and that's what I need… when you work in the garden all day and hands get stiff, you don't need the gloves to get stiff too ;~D Thanks for an awesome review, Shawna! I also “Liked” their Facebook Page!!!
