Shade Garden Flower Combinations That Snap

Shade garden combination impatiens, hokone, geranium, and heuchera

This snappy combination is working for my front shade garden; Impatiens – ‘Expo Orange’, Hakonechloa Aureola – ‘Golden Hokone Grass’, Geranium ‘Jolly Bee’, and Heuchera ‘Palace Purple’.

While the color combination of orange, chartreuse, and purple might not be a traditional one, I find it brings eye-popping interest to the path and lights up a dark area. Plants have been grown in an all organic soil mix  with a combination of Organic Mechanics, rotted manure, and my Illinois clay soil.

What interesting combinations are you cooking up in your garden?

We have Impatiens that color in a hanging basket and it always makes me smile. It's a nice bright color.

  2. Thanks a bunch! I love them too!

My problem is shade AND the mass & mess of roots from a Norway Maple. Can't be mad at the maple, though, it shades the house nicely from the afternoon sun.

  4. Hey Anonymous. Here's something you can try – building a floating patio – http://thecasualgardener.blogspot.com/2010/05/creative-solution-for-tree-root.html).

Great idea if you have a lot of maple roots!

    Best wishes,
